Orthodox Funerals
At Ruby Memorial Home, we honor the rich traditions of Orthodox Christian funerals with care and respect. We understand the importance of these rites in celebrating the life and faith of your loved one, and we are dedicated to providing services that align with Orthodox Christian customs.
Orthodox Christian Funeral Rites
Preparation of the Body:
- The body is typically washed and dressed in new or clean clothes, often white, symbolizing purity.
- A simple wooden coffin is preferred, reflecting humility and the natural return to the earth.
Funeral Service:
- The funeral service, or Trisagion, is held in the church, officiated by a priest.
- The service includes readings from the Scriptures, hymns, and prayers, focusing on the resurrection and eternal life.
- An open casket is customary, allowing family and friends to pay their last respects.
Burial:
- Burial is the traditional method of final disposition, symbolizing the natural return to the earth.
- The graveside service includes additional prayers and the lowering of the casket into the ground.
- The cross is often placed at the head of the grave as a symbol of faith.
Memorial Services:
- Following the burial, it is common to have memorial services at intervals, such as the 3rd, 9th, and 40th days after death, and annually thereafter.
- These services are held to pray for the soul of the departed and to support the grieving family.
