Obituary for Peter Ernst Huhndorf

Peter Ernst Huhndorf
Peter Ernst Huhndorf, 74, of Morristown, NJ, passed away on September 25, 2015.
Cremation was private and arrangements are under the direction of Ruby Memorial, 202 Stockton Street in Hightstown, NJ. Memories and Condolences may be shared at www.rubymemoriahome.com.

Born in Germany on January 17, 1941 to the late Ernst and Anna Marie (Egolf) Huhndorf, Peter moved to the United States at the age of 8, eventually residing and attending schools in Bedford, Pennsylvania, until ultimately becoming a naturalized citizen and lifelong resident of Morristown, New Jersey.
He honorably served the United States Armed Forces and showed outstanding service and loyalty to the United States, particularly in VietNam, where he took a sniper's bullet and spent two years recovering in a hospital. He proved wrong the doctors who told him he would never walk again, and eventually returned to roller-skating (Chicago-style!), a passion he carried with him from his youth. As an adult, he spent a lot of time at the Florham Park Roller Rink.
Outside of a short stint with another company, Peter dedicated his career to the Mahaffy & Harder Engineering Company of Fairfield, New Jersey, for whom he traveled around the world to install and service the company's top-notch pharmaceutical and meat packaging machinery. He worked with them until his retirement in 2006.
A member of the Sports Car Club of America for over 35 years, Peter also was a racing enthusiast. He owned his own Formula V car, which he maintained and raced for many years at tracks including Watkins Glen, Limerock, and Bridgehampton. He was a full-time lifelong active fan of any racing, but Formula 1 and Nascar were at the top of the list.
Dean Koonz's literary works provided many hours of delight for this avid reader and lover of science fiction.
He competently combined his intellectual abilities and technical skills with his childhood addiction to toy trains throughout his entire adult life, and spent a lot of time creating train layouts and putting his American Flyer, Lionel and smaller gauge trains through their paces and antics. He was extremely proud of one of his first train layouts in Bedford at the age of 9, which included making a hole in the wall between two rooms so he could test out his bridge and tunnel -- to his parents' dismay when they came home and discovered what he had done.
Train sounds and whistles would always be heard in the background if you happened to stop by or call -- most likely also accompanied by the "Peanuts" theme song. Snoopy and the gang were also favorites who kept Peter company at home, at work and in his car, as did Betty Boop -- who was a very special and beloved character in Peter's life. Peter loved the Jersey shore, and his memories of Seaside Heights were among his most treasured. He also greatly valued and treasured his friendships with a lot of people -- most with a funny but meaningful and affectionate nickname -- who lived in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Florida, St. Louis, California, and across the nation. Peter is survived by his three sisters Gitta Calhoun (Rome, New York); Gaby Cummins, and her husband Charles "Chuck" (Canastota, New York) and Petra Huhndorf (Waxweiler, Germany). He was pre-deceased by his father, Peter Ernst; his mother, Anna Marie (Egolf); his stepmother Ellen; his beloved step-father Paul J. Egolf and mother-in-law Dora Logue; his son, Michael Ernst (2012). His daughter Tina joined him on October 1, 2015. In remembrance of Peter, donations can be made in his name to the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA Inc.), P.O. Box 19400, Topeka, KS 66619-0400 or to any organization of your choice that makes a difference in the life of a child.
