Shirley Chang

–

West Windsor Township, New Jersey

Shirley Chang, affectionately known as Sa-Li, took her final bow on February 20, 2025. Born in Jiang Xi, China, on September 29, 1941, her life was an inspiring saga of courage, generous spirit, and undying love for her family. A smart and independent woman, Shirley believed that women could always “find a way” to overcome obstacles, a mantra she lived by throughout her life. Reflecting on her life, we are reminded of the words of Maya Angelou: "I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it."

Shirley’s story is a testament to the power of dreams, perseverance, and education. She spent her life in various cities, from South Brunswick, NJ to Seattle, WA, before finally settling in the serene West Windsor Township, New Jersey. Shirley was a dedicated computer analyst for Citibank for many years before retiring as an independent consultant. Her professional accomplishments only mirrored her personal passion for knowledge and education. Shirley strived to ensure that her children and grandchildren were successful students, driving home the importance of learning at every opportunity.

A woman of many talents, Shirley found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as sewing, gardening, and cooking. Her house and lawn were her pride and joy, and her beloved family and friends, her greatest treasure. Shirley is survived by her loving husband, Shih Chang; her adored daughter, Hao (Michael) Chang; her cherished grandchildren, Chris and John Zuraw; her supportive brothers, David (Phyllis) Hung and Howard (Jia-Ling) Hung; her caring sister, Ming-De Hung; and her dutiful nephew, Ming (Tracy) Yan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Chu-Bao (San-Ying) Hung and San-Ying (Chu-Bao) Ho, and her dear sister, Sa-Fei Hung.

In the words of Helen Keller, "What we once enjoyed and deeply loved we can never lose, for all that we love deeply becomes a part of us." Shirley's legacy of love, courage, and strength continues to live on in those she touched. We invite you to celebrate Shirley’s life by sharing memories and photos on her memorial page. Your contributions will serve as a comforting reminder of the remarkable woman we were privileged to know and love.
