Hunasagatta C Nanjundaswamy Obituary (1948 - 2024)

It is with profound sadness that the Swamy family announces the peaceful passing of Dr. H.C. Nanjundaswamy, aka Dr. Swamy, at his home in New Jersey on January 24, 2024. Dr. Swamy was a devoted and loving husband, a supportive and caring father, and a wonderful and energetic grandfather. Equally, he was an amazing friend to many people all across the world. He will forever be deeply missed. Dr. Swamy was born on October 24, 1948, in the very small village of Hunasagatta, in the state of Karnataka, India. He boldly left the comforts and simplicity of home at an early age to attend high school at Sri Ramakrishna Vidyashala in Mysore, Karnataka to start pursuing his dream of becoming a physician. He graduated from Mysore Medical College in 1972 and proceeded to take the even more audacious step in 1974 of moving to Jamaica, Queens in New York City (with no awaiting family to arrive to) to start his medical career in the United States. After 4 years in New York City, he relocated to western Pennsylvania, where he raised his family and practiced medicine for 40 years as an Internist and Nephrologist in Ellwood City, PA. During his time as a practicing physician, he contributed to his community in many ways, including serving on various committees of Ellwood City Hospital, where he eventually served as president of the medical staff. Dr. Swamy was also a fellow of the American College of Physicians and an active and lifelong member of TAPI and a Patron member of AAPI. Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Swamy was active in various religious organizations, both locally in Pittsburgh and nationally. He was a corporate member of the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Pittsburgh, PA. Additionally, he was a strong supporter of the Veerashaiva Samaja of North America (VSNA), being a life member and serving on the Board of Regents. He made countless lifelong friends along the way through all of these various endeavors. After retiring in 2016, Dr. Swamy enjoyed spending even more time with his grandchildren and improving his golf game and eventually moved to New Jersey in 2022 to be closer to his family. Dr. Nanjundaswamy is survived by his beloved wife Tara, his son Anup and his wife Puja, his daughter Bindu and her husband Vishal, and his four beautiful grandchildren who he loved dearly: Ishar, Aava, Alanka, and Deccan.
