Hiran Desai, 79, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 5th, 2026 in Princeton, NJ.
To know her was to hear her, whether she was singing or speaking her mind. Music was her great love of this lifetime. She sang with a beautiful voice and the fullest heart, and she brought that voice everywhere she went. She had a zest for life, a style that was entirely her own, a love of reading and all good books, and she never tried to be anyone but herself. She held strong opinions and shared them without fear, and the people who knew and loved her wouldn't have had it any other way.
Her courage was simply extraordinary. The challenges throughout her life were often immense and unthinkable; her will to keep going was far greater. She underwent a lung transplant over 16 years ago and defied all the odds by surviving and thriving. Afterwards, she didn't slow down. She kept singing, kept working, and kept inspiring the people around her with her kindness and her voice. She faced two cancers and many other health challenges with a tenacity only she could summon, and she met each one on her own terms.
Though she built a life and a family in New Jersey, her heart always belonged to Bombay. Now we pray her soul is singing again with her beloved younger brother, Mukesh, as they are finally reunited.
She is lovingly survived by her husband, Ramesh Desai; her children, Shital Desai and Neha Shah, and their spouses, Jignya Desai and Shalin Shah; and her grandchildren, Dilan, Kaayan, Aidyn, Simran and Caryna, each of whom carries Dadi/Aaji's beloved traits, character, and gifts. She will live on in them forever.
In lieu of flowers, please sign up to be an organ donor and/or donate to Penn Medicine or New York Presbyterian who cared for her so lovingly these last several months and years.
