Namaskaram,
On Saturday, May 11, 2024, Gubbi Subbaraya Manjunath (known as Manjunath to his family and many friends), a beloved husband and father, passed away at the age of seventy-one at Jersey Shore University Medical Center of complications related to pancreatic cancer. After a short illness and hospitalization, he passed away peacefully under hospice care with family at his side.
Manjunath was born on May 1, 1953 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, to G.S. Subbaraya and G.S. Parvati. In his childhood and youth, he was known for his persistent curiosity, inquisitive nature, and unbridled love of food, movies (especially those of Dr. Rajkumar and Amitabh Bachchan), and music of all kinds. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Biology from Bangalore University, and then was invited to the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics in Berlin, Germany, in a research position. Following his time in Berlin, he moved to Windsor, Canada, and completed an M.S. in Molecular Biology between 1982-1986 at the University of Windsor.
He was married on February 4, 1987, to Uma Subramanyam Holali, and moved to the New Jersey-New York area, where he worked in molecular biology and pharmaceuticals. As the field of information technology began booming in the 1990s, he made a change in career to IT. His daughter, Deepa, was born in September 1992, and he and his family made a home in Aberdeen Township, New Jersey, where he lived the rest of his life.
To his friends and family, Manjunath was known as a doting father and husband - the kind who would stay up all night taping Barney re-runs for his toddler daughter and binge-watch Hindi mythological serials and Korean dramas with his wife. He was diligent and methodical with everything he did, but his seriousness would often give way to a child-like lightheartedness and he would find delight in the simplest things. Once an intellectual subject caught his attention, he would dive deep into the matter and share his findings with whoever expressed an interest. He had a compassionate and generous heart and was always ready to help family members in need. He was immensely proud of his daughter's career path in medicine.
In the last three years of his life, Manjunath was inspired to devote himself to the worship of Lord Shiva through learning Sanskrit and reciting devotional chants such as Sri Rudram. This practice gave him much peace and meaning in the later stages of his life.
He is survived by his wife (Uma), daughter (Deepa), and siblings (Lakshmi, Shanthi, Subramanyam, and Uma).
He was a beloved husband, father, brother, brother-in-law, and uncle to his family, and we will all miss him dearly.
We pray to his beloved Lord Shiva to bless his departed soul with eternal peace and give strength to those of us he left behind.
We invite his friends, family, and our community members to his last rites ceremony. Please see details below.
