Condolences

Condolence From: Suzy Eppling
Condolence: I had the pleasure of meeting Sunil at the OrigamiUSA convention this past summer. We were both attending the event with a child and were assigned to room together. I recall that Sunil arrived late at night and was greeted by a flooded room. I think something had gone wrong with the ac. Despite this inconvenience, he was upbeat. He enthusiastically offered me some Indian snacks that he had prepared and busied himself cutting long strips of paper. He had invented a way to knot paper into a beautiful model and was looking forward to teaching others how to make it. I hope his positive spirit lives on in other origami enthusiasts when they fold the “Knotty Blossom.” Suzy Eppling

Condolence: My name is Raghu. I am from the Chicago area. I was shocked to hear the news of his passing. My deepest condolences to the family members. The first time I met Sunil was when we shared a hotel room at the Kumon Vancouver Conference. That was my first Kumon Conference. He gave me some tips on how to run a Kumon center. We then went to visit a couple of places around Vancouver on the last day of the conference. I met him at every Kumon Conference after that. I will upload the photos with him once I find them. Again, my deepest condolences to the family. May his soul rest in peace. - Raghu

Condolence: Dear Hemal and all Dhavalikars, It is really a shocking news of Sunil's passing away suddenly. We knew him since long when our daughter Pratima started her own 'Kumon' and since they started 'Suma Food'. Last we saw him during screening of 'Kasav' film in NJ but could not meet him as he was on stage and with dignitaries. WE pay our tributes to the departed soul and pray that his soul rest in peace. Our heartfelt condolences to you and both sons. Haribhau & Kavita from Pune-India (Parents of Pratima & Prasanna)

Condolence From: Rajesh Selukar
Condolence: I have known Sunil for a long time because he was a close friend of my older brother, Ashok. We came to US (he to NJ and me to NC) about the same time (early 80s). Because Sunil lived close to major airports (JFK, Newark, ..) and a major city (NY), I ended up visiting Sunil, and after his marriage Sunil and Hemal, numerous times. In fact, during 80s and early 90s I am sure Sunil and Hemal lived in a constant fear that I will show up at their home for a multiday stay! Needless to say, Sunil and Hemal have been part of many important moments in my life. I will mention just two of these here. In their first US visit in 89, my parents got to see NY in a very leisurely fashion because Dhavalikars hosted us for more than a week. They lived in Jersey City at that time. My parents have very fond memories of that stay. After my marriage in India, Vanashree (my wife) and I were picked up from the Newark airport by Sunil. That is, Vanashree’s first few days in the US were at Dhavalikar’s! After all this description of my association with Sunil and Hemal one might rightly assume that we have been in regular contact. However, that is not the case. Even though we got regular news about each other through our common contacts, actual meetings or phone conversations between us have been quite infrequent in recent years. Mainly the life became quite busy for all of us. In fact, the last time I saw Dhavalikars was when a few years ago they (including Charu and OM) briefly stopped at our place on their way to Atlanta (I think). Even though very brief, this visit was lot of fun. It was the first time I saw Charu and Om as adults. I was pleasantly surprised by how easily they took us as their friends. I always assumed that after the life became a little less busy (particularly for Dhavalikars) there will be many occasions to meet and have relaxed get-togethers. Sunil’s unexpected passing has saddened me a lot. I am not a religious person and I don’t know the meaning of life. However, I do understand the importance of friendships. I want to tell Hemal, Charu, and Om that they are always in my thoughts. We will have many get-togethers and will remember Sunil.

Condolence: Dear Hemal, Charu, Om, Tatya, Prasad, Ravi and All Dhavalikars: Like everyone, I am wondering why Sunil left our life so suddenly and early; well - maybe god has more plans for him in the outer world there..!!! People like him are in demand everywhere. As I recall my association of over 40 years from our Fergusson College days, literally countless memories come up of his limitless zest and enthusiasm for life; we all know his passion for always trying multiple new things! Like all Dhavlikars, he had great affection for people and friends - always ready to help in any way possible.... Last met him and Hemal in June-2016 when I stayed with them overnight during my NJ visit. Spoke with him last on his birthday in August this year. I will be there on Saturday, Oct 28 to bid him good bye... Sunil - our dear friend - RIP Ashok

Condolence From: Eric Braun
Condolence: The first thing that happens when I think of Sunil is I get a huge smile on my face. As a spouse of a Kumon instructor, I always look forward to seeing Sunil at the annual conferences. In fact, I seek him out for that glowing smile and to hear a new joke. Sunil was the first and last on the dance floor. It will not be the same without him. I cannot imagine him being gone, and I feel so sorry for his family. He was way too young and had way too much life in him! I will miss you, Sunil, but we will dance for you at next year's conference. All the best to his family during this difficult time! Eric

Condolence: Dear Family, I was so very sad to hear that we have lost Sunil from our origami community and from all of our lives. He was such a positive and optimistic spirit. Even though he had been on our Board of Directors for only a few months, he had so many good ideas and so much enthusiasm for spreading the joy of origami. I wish that we could have worked together on some of the projects he suggested. I hope that over time your treasured memories will persist and the pain of this time will recede into the background. Sunil will never be forgotten.

I wish you peace and strength during this difficult time. You will all be in my prayers. Charu, you and your dad befriended me at one of my first OUSA conventions. It was fun to see you two each year after and build our friendship over the years. Even when you were in Med school, Sunil and I would reunite at convention. I was thrilled that he wanted to be on the Board. He was a shoe-in. He was so positive, professional, kind, gentle and passionate! A huge loss for the world.
